Gloss, Top Coats and Finish: How to Choose the Right Final Gel for Your System and Salon Practice
Top coat is the final layer. The finishing touch to the entire service. And yet it remains one of the most underestimated materials in the nail industry. In real salon practice, this is often the stage that determines whether a nail enhancement looks professional only on the day of application, or still looks beautiful two to four weeks later.
Over the years, one thing has proven true again and again: the problem is often not in the structure, the colour, the technique or even the base. Very often, the issue is in the top coat itself. That is why the final shine deserves the same attention as structural materials, UV/LED gels, gel polishes or the correct approach to natural nail care.

Why a Top Coat Is More Than Just Shine
Top coat is often treated as an obvious finishing step. In reality, it performs several important functions at once. It is not just about the visual effect. It is a material that comes into direct contact with the surrounding environment and must stand up to everyday wear over time.
- it protects the entire enhancement
- it affects how long the nails will last
- it determines how the nails will look after days and weeks
- it carries the final visual impression of the whole service
A top coat is not a detail. It is a visible and functional part of the entire system.
How Top Coats Have Changed Over the Years
Looking back, top coats have gone through major development. In the past, layers were thicker, scratch resistance was lower and yellowing was a more common issue. Top coats gradually moved from jars into bottles, the work became more comfortable, and new variants appeared to suit different needs in salon practice.
- Before: thicker layers, lower scratch resistance, more frequent yellowing
- Today: thinner but more durable top coats, glossy, matte, no-wipe and effect finishes
In the past, no-wipe top coats were mainly associated with Quick Finish for firm enhancements. Today, the range is much wider and more universal-looking options are becoming common. Even so, there is still no one “universal” top coat for everything. A natural nail without structure or a gel polish application needs a top coat designed for that specific type of service.
There Is No One Top Coat for Everything
This is one of the most important statements in the entire article. Not every top coat is suitable for every nail type, every system and every client. The differences are in flexibility, hardness, composition and in how the top coat works together with the product underneath.
- one top coat works perfectly on a hard system but fails on a flexible nail
- another may hold beautifully on a smooth enhancement but will not secure stickers or water decals properly
- some contain UV components that can improve the final shade or distort it
- one top coat glows blue in the lamp, another does not
- under one top coat, white French becomes brighter, under another it looks muted
That is why a top coat should never be chosen only because it is glossy or no-wipe. The real question is what it needs to do, on which system, and what final effect you expect from it.
When the Top Coat Causes Problems, It Is Usually Not Random
Peeling, patchiness, loss of shine, greying or fine cracks are often blamed on the colour, the structure or the technique. Real salon experience shows that the cause is very often the top coat itself.
- the top coat is not compatible with the system
- it was applied in the wrong thickness
- it does not fully cover and seal the enhancement
- it is expected to do something it was never designed for
A typical example from practice: if you apply a top coat with a UV filter over a red shade, you may alter the colour your client originally chose. And if you use a thin-layer top over stickers or water decals, peeling becomes very likely.
Practical salon note: If a top coat fails, it does not automatically mean the nail technician or the supplier made a mistake. Often, it is simply a sign that the chosen top coat does not match the system, the layer thickness or the type of nail art.
Why We Trust the System, Not Chance
Years of experience confirm one thing very clearly: when materials are designed to work together, the result is stable. A good system reduces problems, saves time and, above all, saves stress. Mixing top coats across different systems may sometimes work, but it is not a solid base for long-term consistency.
A top coat should never be applied directly to the natural nail without the proper system underneath. At the same time, a visually consistent product setup on the table also looks professional to the client. In bottles, top coats can be thinner or thicker, just as they used to be in jars. Bottles mainly brought convenience, and many versions became easier and faster to apply. Top coats can be with a wipe layer or no-wipe.
DENATO Top Coats Overview: Which Product to Choose and Why
BRILLIANT GLANZ EXCLUSIVE
BRILLIANT GLANZ EXCLUSIVE belongs to the UV/LED finishing gels with a wipe layer. It has a light, medium-flow consistency and a beautifully clear colour. It applies easily, self-levels perfectly and creates a strong “glass shine” that lasts until the next refill.
- extremely resistant to scratching
- does not yellow in sunlight
- perfectly fixes stones, nail art, stamping, acrylic paints and airbrush
- contains a UV filter, but does not glow in the lamp, so it does not change the base colour
- excellent self-levelling ability, does not run
- UV gel with a wipe layer, without added acids
- curing time: 3 minutes in a UV lamp, 90 seconds in an LED lamp, 90 seconds in a CCFL lamp
It is a stable part of the range and a very practical choice when you need more control over the final look of the enhancement. It is also helpful when the nail has been filed more in the cuticle area and you do not want the final finishing step to cause complications. That is why it is often a reliable option where lifting is a concern. It is also indispensable for full-surface nail art that needs secure fixation. It is suitable for all types of enhancements.
Most common salon question: “Why does the gel not look glossy enough after I wipe off the inhibition layer?”
With this top coat, it is important to work with a light hand and use a brush with soft bristles. Good options are brushes no. 6000 or no. 6001 with soft bristles. After polymerisation, let the wipe layer cool down, wipe it with a cellulose pad soaked in Cleanser, then use cuticle oil and a dry pad or nail wipes to buff the surface. This is exactly how you achieve long-lasting shine.
Micro note from salon practice: With wipe-layer top coats, the final shine is often not “lost because of the gel”, but because of wiping too quickly or not giving the surface the right final polish.
RUBBER TOP Glanz and BASE/TOP
RUBBER Top Glanz and BASE/TOP Coat are flexible shine products with a wipe layer, designed mainly for natural nails and flexible enhancements. RUBBER Top Glanz is a finishing gloss with a wipe layer that applies beautifully and keeps nails glossy until the next refill.
Base/Top Coat is both a base and a top in one. It allows even application of coloured gel polish and ensures high shine and long-lasting wear. It is the only top coat in this range that can be used as both the first and the final step.
Both products have a wipe layer, so the finished work must be completed with Cleanser. They are especially suitable for flexible Rubber systems and create a consistent product line together. Rubber enhancements, or simply coloured gel polish on natural nails, are two-phase systems, and these top coats serve as the correct finishing phase.
- with structure: Rubber + Rubber structure + gel polish/Rubber
- without structure: Base/Top + coloured gel polish + Base/Top
Important: They must be applied in a sufficient layer. If you see coloured patchiness on the wipe layer, the applied layer was too thin.
Warning: Do not use them on white French or white full-gel looks. The white will appear muted. For that purpose, use nr. 1403, which brightens white and is designed especially for this effect.
Micro note from salon practice: In flexible systems, the problem is often that the technician chooses the “prettier shine” instead of the more compatible flexible top. The result usually does not appear immediately, but later as cracking or reduced stability during wear.
BRILLIANT GLOSS Top Coat Range
BRILLIANT GLOSS is a unique range of no-wipe UV/LED top coats with perfect shine. They create beautiful long-lasting gloss on the nail surface, protect the enhancement from scratches and are also suitable for flexible enhancements. These top coats have a thinner consistency.
In this range, you will find the Clear version without effect, as well as two modern milky versions: Milky White and Milky Rose. There is also a holographic silver finish worth mentioning. This range shows very clearly how one type of top coat can change the final visual effect of an enhancement without changing the colour underneath.
Micro note from salon practice: With effect top coats, it is always good to remember that they do not only add shine. They also shift the final visual character of the result.
Super Top Glanz ICE – nr. 1405
Super Top Glanz ICE – nr. 1405 is a no-wipe UV/LED top coat with perfect shine. It provides high resistance on the nail surface, protects the enhancement from scratching and maintains a lasting mirror-like finish. In the bottle, it is one of the thicker glosses, and after curing it is firmer than the popular Brilliant Gloss nr. 1484, which remains flexible and is suitable for more flexible types of enhancements.
We recommend this top coat for firm enhancements, and it is suitable for all DENATO materials. For enhancements created with Rubber Base gels, it is better to choose Rubber TOP nr. 5766 or the already mentioned Brilliant Gloss nr. 1484.
ICE is ideal for sealing pigment and, thanks to its firmness, also works very well together with QF nr. 1408. Its thicker consistency makes it an excellent choice for nail art techniques such as sugar effect, stickers, water decals or stones.
This product is not intended to be used as a base. Although it has a safe composition, it is not recommended as the first strengthening layer. The first layer should have a wipe layer to ensure correct bonding with the nail. For this purpose, we recommend Nail Strength Coat nr. 10002, which contains ingredients beneficial for the natural nail plate and creates the ideal bond precisely because of its wipe layer.
Micro note from salon practice: A thicker no-wipe top coat gives more confidence where surface structure, pigment or nail art affects the final finish. That is exactly why it should not automatically be turned into a base product as well.
Perfect Shine Gel
PERFECT SHINE GEL is a no-wipe UV/LED finishing gel that stands out for its flexibility. It is one of the few no-wipe gels that can truly brighten colours, which makes it excellent for white French, for example. It does not crack and protects the surface of the enhancement over time.
It is suitable for all types of enhancements, but it has some specific features:
- it does not yellow in sunlight or in a tanning bed
- it glows blue in the lamp, so it is good to inform clients about this effect
- under lighting in bars or clubs, the nails may visibly glow
- it noticeably brightens and enhances colours
- it may slightly alter the final shade of a colour gel
Micro note from salon practice: This is exactly the kind of top coat that may be perfect for one nail technician and unsuitable for another, not because of quality, but because of the desired colour behaviour and final effect.
QUICK Finish
QUICK Finish is a no-wipe UV/LED finishing gel that delivers long-lasting high shine and a very hard surface. It is applied in a thin layer and is suitable for firm gel enhancements and acrylic. It is a thin-layer, more fluid top coat that is more brittle than the other glosses, which is why it will crack on flexible enhancements.
Where and how to use it:
- on firm enhancements
- for sealing pigments
It is not suitable for fixing nail art created with acrylic paints, water decals or airbrush, and it is not suitable for flexible gel enhancements either. For those purposes, we recommend the wipe-layer top gel BGE or the thicker Top ICE.
Micro note from salon practice: QUICK Finish is one of those products that performs beautifully when it is used exactly where it should be used, and disappoints quickly when universal use is expected from it.
Sparkling Top Coat Silver and Gold
Sparkling Top Coat Silver and Gold are professional finishing gels with a fine holographic shimmer. In the light, they change reflection and transform any colour into a more luxurious effect. They add mirror shine and a new dimension even to basic shades.
They contain ultra-fine holographic particles that create an elegant, fresh and attractive look without becoming overpowering. They hold very well, do not rub off and are highly resistant to outside influences.
- fine holographic silver or gold shimmer
- a luxurious effect that can soften or enhance shades
- mirror shine and sparkling finish
- no streaking
- ready immediately after curing
- does not rub off and offers high durability
- ideal for special effects or refreshing basic shades
Micro note from salon practice: Effect top coats make the most sense when the technician knows clearly whether she wants to simply enhance the colour or move it into a completely different visual direction.
VELVET MATT Top Coat
VELVET MATT Top Coat is a professional matte finishing gel with a luxurious velvety look and no wipe layer. It has a balanced consistency for even application, does not leave streaks and gives the nail surface a soft satin, elegant and pleasant finish.
Thanks to its durability and excellent adhesion, it is ideal for the final phase of nail enhancement as well as nail art that requires precise work without the need to wipe away an inhibition layer. It saves one extra step and, thanks to its thinner consistency, can also be used for painting.
Salon recommendation: It can also be used underneath the free edge of the nail. It protects and seals the nail from below.
Micro note from salon practice: A matte top coat is not only a style choice. In practice, it often also supports precision and saves time, especially in more detailed nail art work.
How to Choose the Right Top Coat in Real Salon Practice
When choosing a top coat, it helps to ask a few simple but essential questions:
- Is the enhancement firm or flexible?
- Am I working on the natural nail or on structured enhancement?
- Do I need to fix nail art, water decals, stones or pigment?
- Do I want to preserve the exact colour, or intentionally brighten it?
- Do I need a wipe layer for the system, or do I want the speed of a no-wipe finish?
These questions help avoid random choices and lead to a product that truly matches real salon work.
The Most Common Mistakes When Working with Top Coats
- choosing by habit instead of by system
- using a layer that is too thin or otherwise unsuitable
- using a hard top coat on a flexible enhancement
- using a top coat with UV effect where the colour should remain unchanged
- using a thin-layer top on nail art that requires stronger sealing
- improper storage in light
Important: Storage and Working with Light
Please remember that these are gel systems with technology that is extremely sensitive to light. During application, it is a good idea to turn the desk lamp away slightly so it does not shine directly onto the brush or into the bottle.
Immediately after use, the bottle or jar should be closed carefully and the product should be stored in a dark place, ideally in a drawer.
Very important note from salon practice: Even if professional salons have windows covered with curtains or blinds, UV radiation still enters the room indirectly. It can pass through the curtain and reach the workspace even from “behind your back”. Long exposure to light, even indirect light, can gradually damage the contents of a bottle or jar. Many professionals do not realise this at all and then look for the problem in the product itself, even though the real cause was storage or leaving the product exposed on the table for too long.
FAQ: Practical Questions Nail Technicians Really Ask
Question: Why does my top coat not shine properly after wiping?
With wipe-layer top coats, the issue is often in the technique. The surface should be allowed to cool after polymerisation, then wiped correctly with Cleanser, and for some top coats, such as BRILLIANT GLANZ EXCLUSIVE, polished afterwards with oil and a dry pad or nail wipes.
Question: Why does my top coat crack on flexible enhancements?
Usually because a hard or more brittle top coat was used on a system that needs flexibility. A typical example is QUICK Finish, which is excellent for firm enhancements but not for flexible ones.
Question: Why does my top coat change the shade of the colour?
Some top coats contain UV components or optical properties that brighten, mute or slightly shift the final shade. In some colours that is an advantage, in others it is not. That is why it is important to know how a specific top coat behaves on a specific shade.
Question: How can I tell that I applied Rubber top too thinly?
A typical sign is colour patchiness visible on the wipe layer. This usually means the layer was not sufficient and the surface was not fully sealed.
Question: Can I use one top coat as a universal solution for everything?
This is one of the most common misconceptions. Some top coats are more versatile than others, but it still remains true that one product is better for natural nails, another for flexible enhancements, another for firm enhancements, and yet another for nail art, pigments or white French looks.
What to Take Away from This
Top coat is the final important step that decides how the work will look after one week, two weeks or four weeks, and what impression the client will take away. In a visible way, it carries one of the biggest responsibilities for the final result.
If a top coat fails, it is not automatically the fault of the nail technician or the supplier. It is a signal to stop and think:
- is this top coat really suitable for this system or this type of decoration?
- does it match the way I work?
- does it truly do what I expect it to do?
These are exactly the questions that separate random results from professional work. That is why top coats deserve the same level of attention as structural materials, builder gels, UV/LED lamps, brushes and the full system used for natural nail care.
